The West Harlem Business Group

The West Harlem Business Group is composed of 6 family-owned businesses from the West Harlem/Manhattanville area

They are community-oriented entrepreneurs who have struggled and sacrificed much to make a good living for themselves and provide vital services to their neighbors

They are land owners guaranteed by law the right to their property except in cases when, for public use, it is needed

Most Importantly,

They are concerned citizens facing the potential outright loss of their land through the abuse of government power

Where Are They Located?

They are in an area they have come to love, provide for, and depend on. They know the names and faces of many of their neighbors and are very close to the beating heart of their community.

They are in an area that Columbia wants the government to see as "blight"-ridden and fit for condemnation.

They are in an area that Columbia has owned land in for years but has not tried to enrich.

They are in an area that Columbia wants to claim as their own.

What Are They Fighting For?

Columbia University must guarantee the six existing businesses in the West Harlem Business Group that the University will not resort to the use of eminent domain in order to condemn the land that the businesses currently occupy.

They must guarantee instead to pursue good-faith negotiations and work with the businesses to reach a fair resolution to this situation.
